Mollie vs Stripe for events: which payment provider should you use?

A practical comparison of Mollie and Stripe for selling event tickets — costs, iDEAL and Bancontact support, payout speed, and how to decide which one fits your event.

You connect your own payment account

With ClearTix you don't sell through our merchant account — you connect your own Mollie or Stripe account. That means the money from every ticket lands directly in your account, and ClearTix never holds your revenue. It also means you get to choose your payment provider, so the obvious question is: Mollie or Stripe?

Both are excellent. The right answer depends on where your audience is and how you like to work.

What matters for ticket sales

For events you mostly care about four things: the local payment methods your audience expects, the per-transaction cost, how fast you get paid, and how painless the setup is.

For European events, the local payment methods point matters more than most organisers expect. A Dutch audience reaches for iDEAL. A Belgian audience reaches for Bancontact. If those buttons aren't there, people abandon the checkout.

The exact rates each provider charges change over time and depend on your account, so always check their current pricing pages. The structural difference is the useful part: for iDEAL and Bancontact Mollie charges a flat fee per transaction, while for cards (Visa, Mastercard) both Mollie and Stripe charge a percentage plus a fixed fee that rises with the ticket price. If your audience pays mostly by iDEAL and Bancontact, your Mollie cost stays largely flat.

Payout speed

This is where connecting your own account shines regardless of which you pick. Because the payment flows straight into your Mollie or Stripe account, you're not waiting for a ticketing platform to release your money days after the event. With your own account, payouts typically land within 24 to 72 hours. For a small organiser covering venue and catering costs up front, that cash-flow difference is real.

Which should you choose?

A simple rule of thumb:

  • Choose Mollie if you're a registered organisation with a business bank account, your audience is mainly Dutch or Belgian, and you want iDEAL and Bancontact front and centre with a simple dashboard.
  • Choose Stripe if you sell to an international crowd, want more technical integrations, or if you're an unincorporated (de facto) association or an individual: Stripe can onboard without a registered legal entity, whereas Mollie generally requires a registered organisation with a business bank account.

You're not locked in either way. If you start with one and your audience shifts, you can connect the other later.

How ClearTix fits on top

Whichever provider you pick, ClearTix's own pricing is a fixed fee per ticket — not a percentage and not a commission. So your total cost is just two transparent parts: your payment provider's fee, plus a flat ClearTix fee per ticket. No surprise platform commission skimming a slice of every sale.

You also keep iDEAL, Bancontact, Visa and Mastercard available at checkout, and because everything is GDPR-compliant and hosted in the EU with no tracking cookies, there's no cookie banner cluttering your ticket page. See the full breakdown on our pricing page.

If you're weighing up platforms more broadly, our Weeztix alternative comparison covers how the commission-free model stacks up.
